Sympathetic

IT might have been the support program to last Thursday night's Group 1 Winter Cup final, but a couple of race winners at Albion Park caught the eye.

Sympathetic (Fabregas-Short Stories by Bit Chili) won a Novice in 30.30 for Ipswich physio guru Garry Gilbert, while later on in the night Magooley (Magic Sprite-Exceeding Lee) landed a graded race in 30.09 for Tony Brett.

Tony, of course, would go on a race or two later to land the Group 1 Winter Cup with Fast Times (Barcia Bale-Clockwise) a mating designed for John Carruthers by Pedigrees By Design.

The pedigrees of both Sympathetic and Magooley are amazingly intense and any fan of bloodlines should take a look at their make-up.

Let's start with Sympathetic.

By that good stud dog Fabregas, his mother Short Stories (Bit Chili-Cool Poss) won just one race at Ipswich in a slow 31.21 during a six-start race career.

However, she is a litter sister to the Group 1 class stayer Eleazar the winner of 12 races who earned $55,000 who was fourth to legend Xylia Allen in the Group 1 Albion Park Gold Cup.

This is the famed female family of Kissy Bear and includes legend Temlee. In fact, Kissy Bear is in-bred 3x2 to Temlee and his half sister Misty Lee Piper which probably accounts for the damline have enormous hyperactivity.

Bill Warner and his wife Jan, great friends of mine who tapped into this female family some time ago, once intensely in-bred to Kissy Bear. While the pups could run, they were (in Bill's words) "lunatics".

Since then, Bill has line bred to Kissy Bear but much further back in the pedigree and it has produced some classy gallopers headed by Group class Lantana Lass.

In Sympathetic's pedigree, the half relations Bearability (Credibility-Kissy Bear) and Head Direct (Head Honcho-Kissy Bear) are brought in 5x4.

But, Sympathetic is also line bred 2x3 to Bombastic Shiraz along the direct sireline on both sides of the pedigree.

The intensity does not stop there.

Sympathetic's dam Short Stories is out of a daughter of Big Daddy Cool who is bred on an identical cross to Bearability. So many of the best progeny sired by Fabregas (No Donuts is just one) have Big Daddy Cool in their damline.

Short Stories, herself, is in-bred 3x3 to Elle's Commando via daughters.

Sympathetic can run. She had won a Maiden at Albion Park in a smart 30.09 from three starts for two wins.

Which brings us to Magooley.

Bred by leading Queensland vet Greg Sternberg, Magooley is by Magic Sprite-Exceeding Lee and in 18 starts has won eight times and run four placings for $19,000 in stakes.

He too has won at Albion Park in a smart 30.09.

What interested me about Magooley's pedigree is that both sire Magic Sprite and dam Exceeding Lee are by Brett Lee from a daughter of Spiral Nikita.

No, I probably would not have recommended Greg Sternberg undertake such an intense mating, but in Magooley's case it certainly has worked.

And, don't forget that many of the best progeny sired by Magic Sprite carry a double of Spiral Nikita.

Magooley is a direct descendent of the famed Elusive Rebel damline. She is Magooley's third dam.

Magooley's dam Exceeding Lee is bred on the same Brett Lee/Elusive Rebel cross as legends Where's Pedro, Hallucinate and Crash.

OK, neither Sympathetic nor Magooley are superstars, or at least not yet. But their intense bloodlines are certainly worth of study.

And, as every school child know only too well ... we get nowhere without a decent amount of study
