EVEN over in NZ, Aston Dee Bee continues to turn out top class gallopers, this time Group 1 NZ Derby winner Pedro Lee.
The son of Aston Dee Bee-One Cold Foot by Kilty Lad was a short courser winner at Dapto and Goulburn before heading overseas and last week landing the Derby to add to a couple of other G1 winners by Aston Dee Bee and some very, very smart progeny getting better and better as time goes by.
Pedro Lee's pedigree deserves a closer look because he has some very good lines and some interesting aspects, especially top his mother.
His damline is special, tracing to the famed Thai Magic/Genuine Replica family that still today tosses up class acts. Zambora Brockie is doing the family proud.
Pedro Lee traces to Best Of Diablo (a half sister to Bond) whose best son Prince Diablo (by Premier Fantasy) was a multiple Group winner and is found as the damsire of recent Group stars, littermates Fire Legend and Fire On Ice.
Some years ago, John Carruthers had a sister to Prince Diablo called Premier Journey the G2 Richmond Oaks winner. I implored John to put her to his own stud dog Magic Sprite to bring in a fabulous cross. It didn't really work with Premier Journey.
BUT, Premier Journey's litter sister Mary Lou Cargo was also mated to Magic Sprite and it produced a very good race bitch called Banjo Bewdy. She in turn is the mother of G1 class littermates Flossing and Ghard (by Banjo Boy).
Flossing has been second in the Laurels and third in the Peter Mosman.
Back to Pedro Lee, whose second dam Corgi Griffo is bred on the same Magic Sprite/Best Of Diablo cross as Banjo Bewdy. She is also in-bred and balanced to Spiral Nikita 3x3.
Corgi Griffo was mated to Kilty Lad, a much underrated stud dog, to duplicate Brett Lee 3x3 along the direct sireline on both sides of the pedigree. The result is One Cold Foot, dam of Pedro Lee. One Cold Foot won 25 races in Australian and NZ mostly over short courses.
She was intensely in-bred to famed broodbitch Zimbabwe.
When One Cold Foot was mated to Aston Dee Bee it brought in yet more of the Zimbabwe bloodlines. She is found in the direct damline of Aston Dee Bee's damsire Bombastic Shiraz.
But, also in Aston Dee Bee's dam Aston Elle is a cross of Riviera Moss the litter sister to Zimbabwe's dam Zulu Moss.
In the pedigree of Pedro Lee, Bombastic Shiraz and Sisco Train come in 3x3 and hugely positioned to impact. They are bred on the very same Black Shiraz/Zimbabwe cross.
Interesting also is the fact that among the best progeny sired by Kilty Lad was Crackerjack Max a multiple Meadows, Sandown and Wentworth Park winner. His mother was by Bombastic Shiraz and thus he too, like NZ Derby winner Pedro Lee, carries the up-close cross of identically bred Sisco Train and Bombastic Shiraz.
Some years ago, Pedigrees By Design put together the pedigree for SA GOTY Alicante Bouchet (Kilty Lad-Mighty Chaos) and she too had a cross of Bond in her damline, but also a reinforcement of the "Portrait" family that is also so dominant.
Aston Dee Bee is proving more and more the real deal as a stud dog.
Many of his best progeny carry intense line breeding, especially to Bombastic Shiraz and thus to the Zimbabwe damline.
DOWN in Victoria, Carry On Angel (Mepunga Blazer-Colden Star by Collision) continues to make a name for himself, this time winning a heat of the G2 Geelong Cup.
He was recently third to Barooga Smoke in the G3 Easter Gift.
Dam, Colden Star, won 18 races and was from a litter of six named offspring all of them winners.
Putting Colden Star to Mepunga Blazer brought in some wonderful line breeding ... not a lot of it obvious.
The first was the proven "nick" of Brett Lee and Collision. They are both bred on the Brother Fox/New Tears cross but in reverse. They are found in many great race dogs.
Mepunga Blazer has Premier Fantasy as his damsire and thus an important ancestor in his pedigree. He also carries a cross of the Wheeler family's famed foundation broodbitch Gail's Beauty on both sides of his pedigree but most importantly in his damline.
Carry On Angel's direct damline traces to the imported Airport Express damline one of the strongest in Ireland. This is the damline of Exception the dam of famed sire Fortress.
Therein lies the link to Premier Fantasy. Exception's second dam is the legendary Maythorn Pride.
Premier Fantasy's damsire is Murlens Slippy whose third dam just happens to be Maythorn Pride.
AND, Carry On Angel is also in-bred to US hall of fame stud dog HB's Commander and balanced to him via daughter and son.
So, while we look at the pedigree of Carry On Angel and see a virtual outcross mating ... the real scenario here is that both sire and dam carry so many similarities.
