WHY NOT GINGER
BACK in February 2018, the Fernando Bale-Why Not Donna bitch Why Not Ginger won the Traralgon Floodfawn Classic for Gail and Greg Carter at Devon Meadows.
It sparked my attention because Why Not Ginger was the very first feature race winner by Fernando Bale that carried line breeding to his own US bloodlines.
Why Not Ginger is line bred 3x4 to that great US speed influence Gable Dodge and he comes via sons Kelsos Fusileer and Gable Lafourche.
It was a real standout in her pedigree and I have watched ever since for similar line breeding via Fernando's US influence sireline to stand out. It's been a fairly fruitless task.
Fernando's very best progeny almost all carry intense in-breeding to the Wheeler family's famed foundation broodbitch Gail's Beauty, or to the standout ancestors found in the pedigree of his dam Chloe Allen.
It is remarkable how this has happened via his Group winning performers ... almost every one.
So, when Why Not Ginger won again at The Meadows last week to bring up win No 14 and $58,000 in stakes, it was time to revisit her pedigree to see just how it had worked.
Why Not Ginger is from a litter of seven named offspring and all have been winners. They also include Why Not Maxine (11 wins, $20,000).
The Carters will be over the moon with the results of the litter especially "Ginger".
Dam Why Not Donna (Lord Ducal-Why Not Molly) started 68 times for four wins and 23 placings earning $18,000 her wins coming twice at Sandown and once each at Cranbourne and The Meadows. None were city wins.
But, Donna was a litter sister to Why Not Wayne (14 wins, 38 placings, $61,000) and a multiple city winner who got 700m. No wonder Donna got her chance at stud.
While the duplication of Gable Dodge is obvious in the pedigree of Why Not Ginger, it is the 4x4 cross of Awesome Assassin and Who's Ablaze, plus the cross of Lansley Bale in the damline of Ginger's damsire Lord Ducal that really sparked interest.
You see, Awesome Assassin and Who's Ablaze are virtually brother and sister so close is their pedigree match.
They bring in Centrefire and her brother Shining Chariot, a double of Acacia Ablaze, and a double of the famed producer Mad Midge via daughters.
I suggest anyone with even the slightest interest should undertake a "test mating" of Awesome Assassin-Who's Ablaze on greyhound data to see just how close they are bred. It is exactly the sort of in-breeding to aspects of his dam that has worked with Fernando Bale.
But, the added bonus here is the fact Wheeler-bred Lansley Bale is in the damline of Why Not Ginger's sire Lord Ducal. Fernando and Lansley Bale both trace directly to Gail's Beauty ... yet another important theme in the success of Fernando at stud.
It will be interesting to see which way the Carters decide to go with Why Not Ginger when she eventually retires to stud after a prolific race career.
UP AT Albion Park, No Easy Beat (Zambora Brockie-Lilly Sur Seine) stamped himself a hot youngster from a hot litter.
No Easy Beat ran 29.81 to beat a Novice field pointlessly and this added to the win by his litter brother Stinger Noir in a Novice final at Albion Park a few weeks back.
Dam Lilly Sur Seine (Barcia Bale-River Seine) was unraced but she was from a litter that included Group 1 class stayer Big Easy Red (22 wins, $133,000) in stakes. Their dam River Seine was a classy race bitch and had already been a Group producer before Big Easy Red came along.
Zambora Brockie was easily one of the very best of his time, multiple Group 1 winner and with a very interesting pedigree. His damsire Flying Stanley (sire of champion Glen Gallon) is a bit of a sticking point for Zambora.
Flying Stanley, apart from Glen Gallon, was a bit of a flop at stud and was unceremoniously dumped on Ireland from the US after a wonderful race career.
Brockie will need to mate bitches who bring in LOTS of line breeding to either negate Flying Stanley's influence or reinforce some of the better lines in his pedigree.
The pedigree of hugely promising No Easy Beat is exactly this.
Brockie's dam Flying Liddy (Flying Stanley-Crazy Jo by Trendy Leigh) is bred identically to River Seine who is by Kiowa Sweet Trey (sire of Flying Stanley) from a daughter of Brett Lee, the litter brother to Trendy Leigh.
I have always thought Brett Lee would be absolutely crucial to Zambora Brockie's chances at stud.
No Easy Beat and Stinger Noir are already proving this.
It is also great that Barcia Bale's daughters are proving their worth in matings away from a reinforcement of the Wheeler family's Gail's Beauty line.
