TERRY Hines can find a good dog.
Jason Thompson sent him off in the right direction a few years ago when he suggested he buy Whisky Assassin (Awesome Assassin-Princess Whisky by Captain Standby). It was the best buy Terry, a big time property developer on the Sunshine Coast, has made … just ask him.
But Terry is always on the lookout for a bargain, and he might have found one in the shape of Tomahawk Lad (Primo Uno-Nellie Dillon by Collision).
When Ron Ball put the polish on the black dog and turned him into heat and final winner of the Dave Brett Memorial Maiden at Albion Park last Thursday night, it was obvious Terry had another star.
To me, Tomahawk Lad has an extremely interesting pedigree.
He is one of the first city class performers produced by a daughter of Collision. It is very early in the career of Collision as a stud dog to gain any valuable insight into what his daughters will produce to.
Tomahawk Lad's dam Nellie Dillon (Collision-Poverty by Golden Currency) is an extremely well bred and in-bred bitch. She didn't show much of it on the racetrack winning just three races, two at Temora the other at Wagga.
In fact, racetrack ability seems to have missed a generation here.
But Nellie Dillon has a pedigree just waiting to produce quality offspring like Tomahawk Lad.
Firstly, Nellie Dillon is in-bred 4x3 to Centrefire and her full brother Shining Chariot (Chariot Supreme-Shining Light). Mixing Centrefire and Shining Chariot often results in great racetrack ability. As we said, Nellie Dillon missed out on that score but you all must remember, Nellie Dillon still contains those very valuable genes within her own pedigree.
Nellie Dillon also carries a daughter duplication of Brother Fox 4x4 and also has a SON of his half brother Acacia Park (Acacia Ablaze).
For Nellie Dillon to produce at stud, she firstly needed a SON of Brother Fox to be contained in the stud dog she mated. When she was put to Primo Uno, there waiting for her was Walkabout Sid (son of Brother Fox) in Primo Uno's immediate tail female line.
Primo Uno also carried Buka Sunset (through a daughter) in his pedigree to link with his litter brother Malawi (through a son) in the middle of Nellie Dillon's pedigree, and there was also a 4x5 duplication and sex balance to Eaglehawk Star, a common theme in many of Collision's best progeny.
The in-breeding to Centrefire and her brother shining Chariot in the pedigree of Nellie Dillon, also meant she could do with a DAUGHTER of Waverly Supreme* the sire of Chariot Supreme (sire of bother Centrefire and Shining Chariot).
Primo Uno carries a daughter (Waroo Lass) of Waverly Supreme in her sireline.
Nellie Dillon had plenty more to recommend her other than three country race wins and a fine pedigree. She comes from one of the best damlines this country has seen, a line that continues to produce quality offspring generation after generation after generation.
Nellie Dillon is a half sister to former top galloper Penny Drum (Token Prince-Poverty). He went to stud after wins in the Young Star Classic at Wentworth Park and a number of berths in Group finals.
Poverty (Golden Currency-Silver Cassie) was a sister to Yosemite Saint a Moss Vale 600m track record breaker and finalist in the National derby and Winter Stake at Wentworth Park. Another brother, Plunder Gold was fourth in the Christmas Gift at Wenty.
Silver Cassie (Curryhill Brute*-Silver Slipper) won 25 races including the Richmond Oaks, Nowra Cup and five at Wentworth Park as well as running a Newcastle track record. Her litter brother Silver Chisel won the Melbourne Cup and sired champion Winged Runner when he went to stud.
Silver Slipper (Brother Fox-No Reverse) was a sister to The Silk who was third to Brother Fox in the Vic Peters and a National Derby finalist.
No Reverse (Reverse It-Wee Palana by Overflow Eagle) was a half sister to Duration who won the Qld Derby and XXXX Trophy at the Gabba.
Interestingly this line traces back to Sweeping Fairy (second dam of Wee Palana). Sweeping Fairy (Black Top-Sancerie by Magic Babe) is the granddam of champion galloper and legend producer Camden Glider (dam of Glider's Son and Peter Glider).
Nellie Dillon could be a perfect broodbitch to be mated to any stud dog that carries Hotshot in their pedigree. Hotshot's third dam Sister Heather is by Glider's Son (Early Copy-Camden Glider) from Lady Glider (Waverly Supreme-Camden Glider).
Nellie Dillon, of course, would also be ideally suited to matings to either Surf Lorian, or Bombastic Shiraz.
She has all the right “outcross” strains to suit a mating to Surf Lorian, and being in-bred to Centrefire and Shining Chariot, will also multiple the damline influence of Princess Diro so saturated in Bombastic Shiraz's dam Bombastic Blonde.
It would also duplicate Malawi's Prince 3x4 and that almost always works with Bombastic Shiraz.
