WHEN Dennis Reid rings to discuss bloodlines, you know you have to be at your best.
Dennis has bred champions.
I've been mates with “Reidy” for decades. He and I partook of too many ales on a trip to the live hare coursing in Ireland back in the early 1990s. It left us with headaches, a love of coursing, Ireland, and a mateship that has been great since.
Dennis' list of champions is long.
He has recently almost abandoned his own famous Travelling Girl damline. He has Do That still firing and she is certain to keep the flag flying in the future.
But a couple of years ago he liked the look of a litter of Droopy's Newell-Sweet Apple Pie pups bred by Queenslander Greg Paull. The bitch had been smashed into the running rail at Ipswich and almost died. Greg knew how good she was and devised a pedigree to suit, to Droopy's Kewell.
Dennis got a couple of the pups on a rearing deal with Greg. One of those, Angel Bay, was “anything” but injuries stopped her reaching the heights Dennis and his son Mathew had for her.
She is destined to be bred with.
Dennis grabbed Sweet Apple Pie (Southern Champ-Lucky Penna) and decided to breed a litter with her. He and I discussed some likely stud dogs that might suit her.
Sweet Apple Pie is a full sister, from a later litter, to such stars as Art Mann, Texan Beauty, Tiger Strong, Miss Ross, Estella etc. Texan Beauty is the dam of boom Albion Park performer Isadel (by Surf Lorian).
Dennis rang because he wanted to use a stud dog called Dragon Fire (Brett Lee-Hoops Slamdunk) over Sweet Apple Pie.
He asked what I thought.
Dragon Fire is the All American who is already No 13 on the US sires list. As a 2004 whelp, he is just six now so his progeny are only young.
This is how the Dragon Fire-Sweet Apple Pie mating looks:

Gun Law Osti (by Brother Fox)
Brett Lee
Sobbing Sal (by New Tears)
Dragon Fire
Molotiv (by HB's Commander)
Hoops Slamdunk
Flying See Doo
Flashy Sir
Southern Champ
Wise Flyer (by HB's Commander)
Sweet Apple Pie
Light Of Fire (by New Tears)
Lucky Penna
Paris Match (by Brother Fox)

It didn't take long to tell Dennis just how great I thought the prospective mating was.
It has so many interesting links within itself, that it just had to work. The common and dominant ancestors it contained just had to impact.
Brett Lee and Lucky Penna are bred on the reverse cross. Brett Lee was by Gun Law Osti a son of Brother Fox from Sobbing Sal a daughter of New Tears. Lucky Penna was by Light Of Fire (a son of New Tears) from Paris Match (a daughter of Brother Fox).
The intensity is strong among Gun Law Osti and Paris Match who we know are genetic brother and sister both by Brother Fox from daughters of Osti Lee.
This is itself was enough for me to recommend to Dennis that he was indeed on the right track.
But what was the convincing aspect was that Sweet Apple Pie is by Southern Champ the US/Irish bred dog who came to Australia and produced some handy gallopers. He is the damsire of Dashing Corsair.
Southern Champ's dam Wise Flyer was by the legend US stud dog HB's Commander.
Dragon Fire's dam Hoops Slamdunk was by HB's Commander's champion sire son Molotov.
Thus Dennis was duplicating and sex balancing HB's Commander and significantly through the middle of the pedigree.
The position of HB's Commander in the pedigree of Sweet Apple Pie is all important and able to impact on any mating she has.
Dennis and Mathew, only last Tuesday night at Lismore, produced a bitch called Puff Dragon from the Dragon Fire-Sweet Apple Pie litter to win a lowly maiden. She started long odds-on favourite and won by more than five lengths.
Her time of 30.36 was pretty hot for a Maiden winner and she came out of the five box.
Dennis likes the litter … likes them a lot.
He expects them to more than make the grade.
What is even more interesting is the fact Dragon Fire has the bitch She's A Natural as her third dam. This bitch is the dam of Flying Penske who has made such an impact for strength in Australia.
Her second dam is Dia's Stormy Day who is found in the pedigree of Kiowa Sweet Trey that other US stud star who has had an impact within this country.
Puff Dragon could be a natural to be mated to a stud dog with either, or even both, these sires in their pedigree.
