OUT OF RANGE
07.01.2018

KAYDA Shae was a very special greyhound who forever seemed to run under the radar and then tragically died leaving just a handful of semen straws for breeders to grapple over.

His performance to almost run down champion Fernando Bale in the 2015 Topgun was amazing. A slight check around the first turn and a wide berth on the home turn probably cost him victory. I repeat "probably".
Kayda Shae was by Kilty Lad-Cosmic Aphrodite and his pedigree shows a 5x4 cross of the genetic sisters Polly's Portrait (Walkabout Sid-Famous Portrait) and Lovely Portrait (Head Honcho-Famous Portrait). Obviously, Walkabout Sid is the sire of Head Honcho.

The star stayer and Group 1 producer Shimaguni is in-bred 4x3 to the genetic sisters Polly's Portrait and Special Portrait (a litter sister to Lovely Portrait).
When Victorian breeder Darren Pulio contacted Pedigrees By Design a little while ago for some assurances that his mating of Nicki Fields (Knocka Norris-Misty Fields by Droopys Kewell) to Fernando Bale was the right thing to do, we only had to look back to Kayda Shae (and Shimaguni) for positive signs.

The pedigree Darren designed by mating Nicki Fields to Fernando Bale is EXACTLY how breeders should look to Fernando to successfully sire quality greyhounds.

Come the start of 2018 and Darren and Mick Pulio are riding the crest of a wave with the victory by Out Of Range, one of those Fernando Bale-Nicki Fields offspring, in the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows.
And it is the pedigree of Kayda Shae, and the equally famous Shimaguni, upon which the success of Out Of Range and his littermates is based.

Darren and Mick started out with a quality race bitch in Nicki Fields.
She raced 29 times for eight wins and nine placings and earned $35,000 her wins coming at Sandown and The Meadows, Cranbourne, Sale, Ballarat, Warragul and Geelong and she was a finalist in the G1 Superstayers.
She is a sister to the outstanding Xtreme Knocka (33 wins, 33 placings, $214,000).

Out Of Range and his very good littermates are hugely in-bred carrying the genetic brother and sister Primo Uno and Barbie's Shiraz 3x3.
Primo Uno (damsire of Fernando Bale) is by Black Shiraz from Prima Portrait.
Barbie's Shiraz (second dam of Nicki Fields) is also by Black Portrait and from Walking Portrait, yet another of the Walkabout Sid-Famous Portrait litter.

But, Out Of Range also brings in a cross of the full relations Awesome Assassin and Goddess Of Fire 4x5.
In the mating of Nicki Fields to Fernando Bale, Chloe Allen (dam of Fernando) is bred on an almost identical cross to Nicki Fields herself.

Also, Walkabout Sid is brought in three times and balanced as well.
I have no doubt this intense in-breeding is the success behind this mating and had nothing at all to do with Kelsos Fusileer the sire of Fernando Bale.

The Irish influence of Droopy's Kewell (damsire of Nicki Fields) does have some distant links to the Irish lines in Kelsos Fusileer, but hardly positioned to impact.

The other way to successfully mate Fernando Bale is to saturate his offspring with Wheeler bloodlines.
Fernando Bale was represented by two other finalists in the Silver Chief.

They are Mossimo Bale (Fernando Bale-Searle Bale) and Fernando Express (Fernando Bale-Tears Siam).
Both have multiple crosses of the Wheeler bloodlines in their dam to link with the cross of the Wheeler damline in the tail female line of Fernando.

Mossimo Bale's dam Searle Bale is Dyna Lachlan-Princess Bale and a Group class sister to Tomac Bale and genetic sister to Barcia Bale. Dyna Lachlan's dam Benden Flex is duplicated the blood of Gail's Beauty. Princess Bale has another cross of the same family.

Fernando Express' dam Tears Siam, a litter sister to champion stayer Space Star, was a Group class staying daughter of Bekim Bale-Tonto Tears.
Bekim Bale, obviously, again brings in two crosses of the Gail's Beauty female family to link with that in Fernando Bale.

Breeders should not naturally be ready to declare Fernando Bale a champion stud dog despite his first Group 1 success,
As expected, he is proving to be best when mated to bitches that carry LOTS of his own bloodlines.
The winner and two finalists in the Silver Chief are the perfect examples of this.
As always, study the bloodlines of successful race dogs. That study will bring in some fabulous answers.
