Kynan's Express

KYNAN'S EXPRESS
10.07.2010
WHILE the heats of the rich Group 2 McKenna Memorial were being run at Sandown, Bendigo was also in the spotlight on the same night with the Young Star Classic final over 430m.
The race went to Kynan's Express (Big Time Max-Jorja James by Stately Bird) and the winner of 14 of his 25 starts continues to build on his fabulous reputation. He has already been a Meadows winner.
His pedigree absolutely fascinates me because it brings in sire, dam and damsire that have virtually been ignored (Big Time Max), were a racetrack flop (Jorja James) or were a stud flop (Stately Bird).
But Kynan's Express is the result of a proven pedigree mix but coming through relatively untested ancestors.
Big Time Max (Big Daddy Cool-Lil Bit Loony by Prince Of Tigers) won the 2006 SA Derby, Cranbourne Puppy Classic and the 2007 Group 1 Adelaide Cup. He ran in the 2006 Topgun.
He has been virtually ignored since going to stud. Kynan's Express is one of only a couple of offspring he has racing.
Jorja James (Stately Bird-Poetic Light by Light Of Fire) is the dam of Kynan's Express. She raced just seven times and was placed only twice.
One of those was in a heat of the Mega Maiden at Wentworth Park so she obviously showed some ability. She finished only seventh in her semi-final behind Modern Supreme who went on to win that Mega Maiden final.
Her littermates didn't amount to much, but she had a half brother called Macho who won in 30.05 around Wentworth Park and others called Ima Wild Child and Light Years who had ability.
Stately Bird, her damsire, had everything going for him when he retired to stud after winning the Golden Easter Egg with the possible exception of success.
His best progeny in Australia was star stayer Sargent Major who interestingly was line bred to the famous Osti Lee damline … but more of that later.
Stately Bird also sired a dog called Larkhill Bird who was a Group finalist twice in England. Cranbourne Cup winner Stoner Bale was another with ability while Angel Doll showed stamina and is now the dam of top grade Wentworth Park sprinter Lovin' Spoonful (by Ahane Lad).
Interestingly Stately Bird was a genetic brother to Cyrus The Virus who also won the Golden Ester Egg.  Cyrus appeared to get a virus when it came to success at stud. He was “shipped out” to China and rarely missed.
But before he left, he did show an affinity with Prince Of Tigers bitches, several of his best progeny being out of bitches by that sire.
Check out the pedigree of Big Time Max and you will find that his dam Lil Bit Loony is by Prince Of Tigers (Malawi's Prince-Amazing Osti).
And therein lies the key for Kynan's Express.
The Bendigo Young Star Classic winner is line bred to the sisters Amazing Osti and Dollar Bird (Brother Fox-Osti's Magic) and both are to be found along the alternate sex path within his pedigree.
Jorja James might have been moderate to say the best about her racetrack career, but she is from a wonderful damline which traces back to Dusty Cindy a better than good broodbitch.
Poetic Light, second dam of Kynan's Express, was third to her litter sister Crystal Light (Light Of Fire-Winsome Blue) in the Group 1 National Futurity at Wentworth Park. Another sister Winsome Star was fifth in the same final.
To Light Of Fire's son Awesome Assassin, Winsome Blue produced multiple Group performers like Winsome Dollars, Dream, Duchess, Larrikin, Man and Queen.
Winsome Blue was a Wentworth Park winner and third in the Penrith Oaks. Her own sister Blue Blossom was a star stayer, finishing second in the same McKenna Memorial, of which the heats were run last Thursday night.
Winsome Blue was by West Cape from Mink Mitten who was a sister to National derby winner Rapid Supreme and Cindy Lass who was a finalist behind Brother Fox in the Vic Peters at Harold Park.
Rapid Supreme became the sire of top flight galloper Star Title. Rapid Supreme was very moderate at stud although Star Title was better than he was given credit for.
This male line has virtually died out even though it did well through World Title only a few years ago.
Interestingly though, Rapid Supreme is the sire of Spanish City the third dam of Hallucinate and Where's Pedro.
Putting Jorja James (dam of Kynan's Express) to Where's Pedro would be a natural.
It would bring in not only the cross of brother and sister Rapid Supreme and Mink Mitten along the tail female line, but it would also bring in a further reinforcement of the Osti Lee damline and again directly along the alternate sex path.
Where's Pedro has two crosses of the Osti Lee line in his pedigree.
So back to Sargent Major the son of Stately Bird who was the champion stayer of his time. He too carried the reinforcement of the Osti Lee damline along his alternate sex path.
Interesting!
