HEARD it through the grapevine that Brett Lee was not well and when I spoke to his owners Keith and Tracey Pedrana, it was found the dog was suffering and would be put down sometime this week.
There is no doubt the son of Gun Law Osti-Sobbing Sal could run.
A Hall of Famer in Australia for his racetrack deeds, his 28.88 time at Angle Park is still unbelievable.
Just check out his feature race wins.
The Australian Cup, Adelaide Cup, Golden Easter Egg, Maturity, Warrnambool Classic!
He touched everyone who had anything to do with him, from Darren McDonald and Jason Thompson (his trainers), to the number who worked him at stud over the years.
Pedrana says he has 40 frozen straws to sell and will put $20,000 on them, 20 will be for sale, and the other 20 will be to use if the dog misses to those first matings.
Brett Lee was bred to at least be a smart galloper, being by a high class sire from a bitch who won at Group level and was placed in a Melbourne Cup. He exceeded what his pedigree said he should be.
When Brett Lee went to stud it had to be expected he would become a success.
Consider he was retired at a huge service fee and that in itself would exclude many, many greyhound breeders and especially “rubbish” bitches. No one was going to waste a mating to Brett Lee with an inferior broodbitch.
Therein lies much of his success because it is female line strength that really makes a stud dog.
But Brett Lee is one of a few who served to upgrade his bitches.
OK, he did have failures, but what he did do was prove himself with a multitude of different lines the world over.
That in itself is a sign of his success.
He sired champions everywhere like Betty's Angel, Trewly Special, Cromlah Bale, Hallucinate, Meticulous, Superman and many, many more in Australia, Razldazl Billy in Ireland, Dragon Fire in the US.
His worth will be felt for generations to come.
Cosmic Rumble, whose dam was by Brett Lee, is one of the first from his daughters to go to stud.
Already he is serving many, many quality broodbitches.
It is significant that Brett Lee has been among the top sires in Ireland and England for the past few years, rivaled mostly by his own sons Crash and now Ace Hi Rumble.
The fact his advertised service fee has been $14,000 for a few years, and will now be $20,000 for those last remaining straws, it's a tribute to his worth at stud.
Most straws have left this country in the past few years.
Maybe that could be something Padrana will regret in the future.
Brett Lee has slumped down the sires standings in Australia of late simply because most of his stock is now in Ireland and England.
Simply put, he has been an enormous influence.
The world won't be the same without him.
Everyone in the greyhound world knows Brett Lee.
This week will be a sad one, not only for Keith and Tracey Pedrana.
